NOVEMBER LATE START

We had a really different Late Start day in November!  We did a STEM activity where students had to create a tall tower with toothpicks, marshmallows, and gummy turtles.  I had 4 groups of students who worked together to create their tower.  Two groups were able to create a 7 inch tower that remained standing when they were finished.  All had a really good time attempting this task.
We also created turkey glyphs by answering questions about our Thanksgiving traditions. The feathers are foods that they eat at Thanksgiving.

Exploring pumpkins!

We just completed a unit on the pumpkin life cycle.  We watched a couple pumpkin videos, completed a pumpkin life cycle flip book, measured how tall, how big around, and how much our big classroom pumpkin weighed and we found out that a pumpkin can float!

Cowtown's County Fair Education Day

On Friday, October 7 First Grade went to Old Cowtown Museum's County Fair Education Day.  Students came to learn, experience, and participate life in the 1870's.  There were over 100 volunteers who demonstrated skills and crafts from that era.  Some of the activities we participated in were: watching a working blacksmith, operating a printing press, making bread, lifting a hay bale and grinding corn!  It was another wonderful event this week!!
